(NECN: Kristen Caira) - Less than a day old and already Meredith Jones is making history.
Not only is she one of Boston's first babies of the new year, but also because she is marking a very important milestone for a long standing Boston-based institution.
It's now the time of year where we welcome bundles of joy who help us celebrate new life. Meredith Jones was the Mass. General Hospital's first baby to be born after midnight.
She arrived a week past her due date, and her parents thought she was going to be a Christmas present. But now with a cool birthday of 1/1/11, she is helping the hospital celebrate its history by being the first baby to be born in its third century. Mass. General turns 200 this year.
"We deliver about between 3,000 and 4,000 babies a year, so on any given day, there are about 10 or 15 babies that are born here at Mass. General," said Mass. General president Peter Slavin. "It's obviously a very happy floor in the hospital and we're delighted that Meredith has made it such a happy day for us today."
As a birthday gift, Meredith got a basket full of baby stuff, and a $200 savings bond.
