(NECN: Greg Wayland) - Outgoing Mayor Tom Menino has led Boston since 1994.

As Menino prepares to walk away from the job he loves after 20 years, NECN takes a look back at his legacy.

He has been the mayor next door, the chief executive you might meet over the back fence.

He rarely traveled. He had no vacation getaway cottage. He was content, instead, to live with his wife, Angela, in a modest house not far from where he grew up.

On the day Menino officially became Boston's longest serving mayor, he was attending to backyard details, promoting recycling bins in the Roxbury neighborhood.

For his part, Tom Menino always defined his role simply.

"As mayor, I've continued to move this city forward," he said.
