The accountant for a former Massachusetts state senator accused of accepting $1 million in bribes and kickbacks has been indicted on a conspiracy charge.
The U.S. Attorney's office announced Monday that 66-year-old John H. Nardozzi was indicted by a grand jury for allegedly conspiring to defraud the IRS to help state Sen. Brian Joyce, who was arrested and charged in December 2017 with racketeering, extortion, wire fraud and money laundering.
The Waltham resident allegedly fraudulently deducted millions of dollars of personal expenses for Joyce as business expenses for Joyce's law practice, inflated Joyce and Joyce's spouse's self-employment income by more than $2 million for retirement plans and taxes, and left $100,000 from Joyce's personal tax return.
Prosecutors said Nardozzi, who also faces eight counts of aiding and assisting in the filing of false tax returns in addition to the conspiracy charge, helped Joyce from 2011 to 2014.
It's unclear if Nardozzi has an attorney. He's due in federal court in Worcester Monday afternoon.
Joyce has pleaded not guilty to the various charges he faces.
"We believe Mr. Joyce was greedy, plain and simple," FBI Special Agent-in-Charge Hank Shaw said in December when Joyce's arrest was announced.
