Economy Heats Up: Jobless Rate Falls to 6.3 Percent

U.S. employers added a better-than-expected 288,000 jobs in April, the biggest monthly increase since January 2012, NBC News reported. The unemployment rate fell to 6.3 percent from 6.7 percent the previous month — hitting a 5-1/2 year low. The drop occurred because the number of people working or looking for work dropped sharply. Still, employment gains were widespread, affecting professional and business services, retail trade, and construction, the Labor Department said.
