Utility Pole, Transformer Crash to Ground, Nearly Hit Vehicle

Incident caused power outages in Watertown, Mass.

Editor's note: In an earlier version of this story, it was reported that a truck struck the pole. NECN has learned that authorities believe the pole came down on its own.

What witnesses described as a freak accident was a close call for a driver in Watertown, Massachusetts.

A utility pole with a transformer crashed to the ground just feet from where a woman and child were stopped in their vehicle.

"She told me that she couldn't believe it. The thing had come down right behind her, she had a baby in the backseat," said Tom Gilarde.

According to Watertown Fire, it appears the pole came down on its own, bringing the transformer and a second pole down with it.

"Nobody hit it," said Gilarde. "I guess it was its time."

The transformer landed on a van belonging to a nearby bakery and took out power to the street, causing problems for businesses in the area, some of which remained without power Tuesday evening.

Thankfully, no one was hurt, including the driver, who left without a scratch.

The utility pole belongs to Verizon. The transformer was property of NStar. Crews from both company were on the scene most of the day as the situation was investigated.
