Falling Ice Causes Gas Leak, Evacuation at Quincy Medical Center

There are reports that the gas leak may have been caused by falling ice

Quincy Medical Center was evacuated on Wednesday afternoon due to a gas leak caused by falling ice and snow.

Quincy Police said Whitwell Street was temporarily closed due to the gas leak, which was reported around 1:45 p.m. There were no reports of injuries, but the hospital was evacuated for about 40 minutes.

MBTA buses were brought in to keep those evacuated out of the cold until they were allowed back into the building.

It's not known at this time what caused the falling snow and ice. Steward Health confirmed the roof was not being cleared off at the time of the incident.

124-year-old hospital is located at 114 Whitwell St. Most of the building was empty at the time of the gas leak since the hospital closed in December and all that remains open is the emergency satellite center.

Officials are urging people to take added precautions when clearing their roofs and to pay close attention to any equipment on the ground below, especially gas meters and pipes.
