PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — A new report says 71 percent of Latino households in Rhode Island rent their homes, compared to 40 percent of the state's households overall.

The report says home ownership is beyond the reach of many Latino families.

Data from Roger Williams University's Latino Policy Institute and HousingWorks RI released Wednesday show that 1 in 3 Latino renters in the state are spending more than half their incomes on housing.

The groups say the median income needed to purchase a single-family home in Rhode Island is nearly $62,000. The average income for Latino households is about $29,000.

The data was aggregated from the U.S. Census, the state Department of Labor and Training and other housing surveys.

Nearly 1 in 3 Latino homeowners also spend more than half their incomes on housing.
