Crimean “Nazi” Billboard Highlights Propaganda Problem: U.S.

A billboard in Crimea shows two pictures of the region, one covered with a Nazi symbol and the other with the Russian flag. State Department officials said Monday that the sign symbolizes how local pro-Russian officials are pitching a referendum that will decide whether or not the peninsula will break away from Ukraine. The billboard, in Russian, says “March 16, we choose,” according to reports. U.S. and Western diplomatic sources, who have called the March 16 referendum illegal, have told NBC News they are working closely on new sanctions against Russia, depending on whether the Russian national assembly, the Duma, approves annexation of Crimea as scheduled for Tuesday.
