A Belchertown driver with eight outstanding warrants allegedly attempted to run over a police officer and smash into several cruisers Monday during a chase.
Miguel Martinez, 32, of Stebbins Street, was arrested after he allegedly led officers on a pursuit through several residential neighborhoods in Springfield, Massachusetts, according to local authorities.
The pursuit began after Martinez passed several cars and accelerated through a red light, at about 9:30 p.m., near the intersection of Union and Walnut Streets.
Several officers, both on foot and in their vehicles, were forced to move out of the way to avoid being hit as Martinez attempted to flee. Police say he made several attempts to ram cruisers with his car over the course of the pursuit.
After allegedly swiping a cruiser, the man attempted to flee on foot. Martinez returned to his vehicle shortly after being confronted and police were forced to break a passenger window in order to arrest him.
Police also say they found an open pint of Hennessy and a small amount of marijuana inside the car.
Martinez faces several charges, which include: assault to murder, reckless operation of a motor vehicle, resisting arrest, assault with a dangerous weapon, refusal to submit, and operating a motor vehicle with a revoked license.

Martinez had previous warrants for speeding, operating an unregistered motor vehicle, assault and battery on a police officer, and credit card fraud under $1,200.
Officials did not reveal an arraignment date. It is unclear if he has an attorney.
