(NECN: Washington, D.C.) - Vice President Joe Biden caught himself on St. Patrick's Day while introducing Irish Prime Minister Brian Cowen during a White House celebration of the holiday.
Biden asked for God's blessing for the late mother of Cowen -- except she is alive.
"God rest her soul," Biden said Wednesday night, before quickly turning around and correcting himself. "Although she's -- wait -- your mom's still alive. It was your dad who passed."
Biden quickly followed, "God bless her soul."
Cowen acknowledged Biden's misstep with a nod and a laugh, shared with those in attendance -- including President Barack Obama.
Biden later cited the Irish proverb that "a silent mouth is sweet to hear" and yielded the podium to the president.
