(NECN: Katie Daly, Worcester, Mass.) - One by one, 100 students at UMass Medical School were handed these white envelopes. Inside, the fate of their next six years or even a lifetime.
It's all part of match day. The day when 4th year med students find out where they will do their residency. During the year students put in their top choices, but don't find out their match until today.
And at noon the moment arrived. All of the medical students opened at the same time.
For Ashley Ferrulo, it was also a perfect match. The 27-year-old has wanted to be a pediatrician for as long as she can remember. She will do her residency at Massachusetts General Hospital.
All of the students are from Massachusetts. And some wont be traveling too far.
Michelle St. Fleur on the other hand has spent her whole life in Worcester and is now preparing for a change. She will be heading to Albert Einstein hospital in New York.
Even if students didn't get their first choice, there is still reason to celebrate. Match day marks the end of their academic career and the beginning of their professional career.
