(NECN/KNBC: Vikki Vargas) - A California grey whale found itself stuck in nearly 50 feet of fishing wire off the coast of Dana Point.

The whale -- rescue crews named it Bart -- had been dragging the net for a week.

The net was filled with dozens of dead animals.

"We had a sea lion, sharks and pretty much the entire ecosystem in that thing," said Dave Anderson, with Dolphin Safari.com.

It took crews nearly seven hours to cut Bart from the net.

When they did, Anderson said Bart had one final message before heading back out to sea.

"He came right up to our boat and almost mouthed, like, a thank you. It was pretty awesome," Anderson said.
