Boston Mayor Tom Menino will not run for sixth term

(NECN: Alysha Palumbo, Boston) - Boston Mayor Thomas Menino will not be running for a sixth term.

Former city councilor and close friend to Mayor Menino, Michael McCormack, told NECN that he confirmed the news Wednesday night.

McCormack added that he was told by people close to the Mayor that Menino will be making the announcement Thursday at 4 p.m.

A source in the administration has confirmed that the Mayor will make the announcement tomorrow that he is not running.

Statement from Councilor John Connolly on Mayor Menino's announcement:  

"Today we celebrate and thank Mayor Tom Menino for his service and unquestionable love for our City.  He has personally touched the lives of tens of thousands of Bostonians, and he ensured a higher quality of life across Boston's neighborhoods.  I am thankful to have worked with him, and to have learned from him."
