(NECN) - Connecticut State Police have learned what caused the death of a 2-year-old boy from Putnam.

Police say the toddler choked on cereal after his father's girlfriend locked him and his one-year-old brother in a bedroom while she went to a methadone clinic.

Renee Peterson of Putnam and David Mahan, the boy's father, are facing several charges. Reckless endangerment is one of those charges.

Peterson's lawyer said she never meant to hurt the child.

Court documents show Mahan knew his children were being locked in their room, but that he didn't agree with the choice.

The boy was pronounced dead back on March 26.
