WORCESTER, Mass. (AP) — Worcester State University has selected a veteran of the Massachusetts public higher education system as its new president.

Trustees on Monday chose Barry Maloney to lead the school. He is currently the vice president for student affairs at Westfield State University.

Trustees Chairman John Brissette tells The Telegram & Gazette that Maloney brings a vision and an energy to the school.

Maloney says he's impressed with student, staff and alumni passion for the school.

The appointment is subject to successful contract negotiations and approval of the state Department of Higher Education.

Maloney takes over on July 1 from Janelle Ashley, who is stepping down at the end of the academic year after 13 years on the job.
