(NECN) – Early Sunday morning, a male victim and two Vermont State Police officers were injured in a shooting incident in Leicester on Lake Dunmore Road.

Officers received the initial call from a female at 3 a.m., stating that someone came into her home and shot her husband.

The male victim was transported to Porter Hospital in Middlebury with life-threatening injuries caused by a gunshot wound to the head. He was then transported to Fletcher Allen Medical Center where he is in stable condition.

Troopers from the New Haven barracks along with Brandon Police and emergency responders tracked down a possible suspect who is a resident of the same road.

The suspect opened fire at officers as they attempted to make contact. One trooper was struck in the head with shotgun pellets. As another trooper returned fire at the house while attempting to bring the injured Trooper to a safe location, the second trooper was shot and was also struck in the head with shotgun pellets.

One trooper has since been treated and released. The other trooper was also transported to Fletcher Allen Medical Center and receiving additional treatment.

Police ultimately took the suspect into custody around 6 a.m. Sunday.

Detectives from the Vermont State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation responded to investigate both shooting incidents.

The investigation is ongoing.
