(NECN: Katelyn Tivnan) – Worcester, Mass. resident Brian Carroll is getting ready to run in his 11th Boston marathon.

He’s running for a good cause.

He’s run more than 1200 miles, each step an effort to give back.

While runners enter for various reasons, Carroll’s is very personal.

He founded the group ‘Brendan's Buddies’ to raise money for premature infant care.

Twelve years and almost 50 marathons later, he’s raised almost $1.6 for the neonatal intensive care unit at UMass Memorial Hospital, a place he credits for saving his son’s life.

The money has helped build a new addition for mothers and their babies.

Caroll’s son Brendan was born weighing just over one pound. After four-and-a-half months in the NICU, he went home a healthy baby.

Katelyn Tivnan has the story.
