The 237-year-old gravestone for a Revolutionary War hero has been "seamlessly" repaired in time for Memorial Day on Long Island, an expert says.
A descendant of Brigadier General Nathaniel Woodhull visited the private family cemetery in Mastic Beach on Sunday and was heartsick to find the tombstone broken into four pieces, Newsday reported.
Nathan Fremont Woodhull IV is a Navy chief petty officer stationed in New Hampshire.
A trustee of the Mastic Peninsula Historical Society worked with an expert to piece the stone back together before Memorial Day.
The expert, Bob Guerriero, says the stone is "priceless."
Suffolk County police determined the incident was not criminal in nature.
