(NECN) - Tom Ridge, former director of homeland security, called into NECN to talk about the bombings in Boston near the marathon finish line.

He says it's an event planner's worst nightmare.

With these kinds of public events that attract thousands of thousands of people, Ridge says they will always be a popular target.

He says we shouldn't underestimate what the planners did everything they could prior to the event regarding security.

He is quite confident they did everything they could to secure the environment. He says you can only manage the risk, not eliminate it.
