Martin Richard's Father Speaks at Bridgewater State Graduation

As Bridgewater State University graduates received their diplomas today, they also received some life lessons from a special commencement speaker. William Richard, the father of the Boston Marathon bombing's youngest victim, Martin, spoke to them about what's really important in life.

"Whether you earn a seven figure income or have a part time job, if you’re saddled with debt or the beneficiary of a trust fund, if you can’t make the time to see the life through the lens of others and get beyond the superficial, you’re nothing to me," Richard said.

His words were blunt, but they held a deeper meaning. He said he received this message from his son, who lived out his 8 years of life showing compassion for others.

"To the extent that Martin is a symbol to us, that symbol only inspires us to keep on doing but with greater urgency and focus," Richard said.
