What Is Pine Tar? Goo in Spotlight After Yankee Ejected

The ejection of New York Yankees pitcher Michael Pineda for using pine tar has renewed attention on the sticky goo with a history in baseball that dates back at least until the 1950s, NBC News reported. Pine tar is made by distilling pine wood at a high temperature in a closed container. Its use in Major League Baseball is restricted to putting on bats for better gripping — as long as it’s no more than 18 inches from the bottom.
