4 Gay Rights Activists Arrested in Russia

An activist group in Russia claims four people were arrested in St. Petersburg Friday as they tried to hang a banner protesting the country's gay rights laws, NBC News reported. They will likely face court tomorrow, a member of the Russian Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender network said. Days earlier, four more activists were detained in the city on Wednesday after they unveiled banners comparing the Sochi Winter Olympics with the 1936 games in Nazi Germany, according to local media reports. Russia passed laws last year criminalizing the promotion of gay "propaganda" to minors and limiting gay adoption. Human rights organizations have claimed that the country has been mistreating gays and lesbians, as displayed in videotaped beatings.
