(NECN: Justin Michaels) - Democratic State Representative Ed Markey will face off against Republican Representative Gabriel Gomez for John Kerry’s empty Senate seat.

Gomez greeted supporters at an MBTA stop in Boston and he spoke with NECN about his campaign.

“I’ve had enough experience going through challenges that are pretty steep, and so I look forward to the next eight weeks,” said Gomez.

He said he wants to send a message: that he is a new kind of Republican and wants to represent all types of people in Massachusetts.

Gomez also said he wants to hold three debates against Markey.
