(NECN: Scot Yount, Boston) - Boston is taking a stand against the state of Arizona and its recently passed stiff immigration law. The city council approved by a unanimous voice vote a resolution calling for the city to pull investments from the Grand Canyon State in protest.
Felix Arroyo/City Councilor: "As a city we do not believe in racial profiling to be good public policy and we believe to be an infringement on the constitutional rights of our citizens and the people who live in this country."
Mayor Tom Menino: "It is so outrageous at this time in our county's history."
Boston Mayor Tom Menino says the city has a million dollar contract with a software company in Arizona called N-Focus. The mayor told NECN that he is drafting a letter to the company to find out if its execs support the new Arizona law.
Mayor Tom Menino: "If they don't agree with my position, we are gonna have to take some legal action, it is a million dollar contract, it is a great program of tracking our young people, but if this company is going to discriminate against anyone, they are not going to do it on my dime."
We reached Ken Stroebeck executive director of the League of Arizona Cities and Towns by phone.
Ken Stroebeck/League of Arizona Cities and Towns: "I don't think that is a wise decision, I am not sure what they would base that decision on." "It is one of those cases where you should really know what the situation is before you pass an action of that sort that really punishes the people of arizona."
Right now Washington DC, New York and at least three communities in California are considering similar measures.
