US Aid Agency Worker, Friend Hacked to Death in Bangladesh

Police said one of the attackers lured the victims into a trap

Suspected Islamist militants armed with axes or knives hacked a local employee of a U.S. aid agency and his friend to death Monday, Bangladeshi police said.

The deadly assault came two days after a university professor was killed in a similar fashion in an attack claimed by ISIS, NBC News reported.

One of the victims, Xulhaz Mannan, was in his 30s and worked for the agency USAID, an unidentified detective on the case told NBC News.

"Xulhaz was more than a colleague to those of us fortunate to work with him at the U.S. Embassy," Marcia Bernicat, the U.S. Ambassador to Bangladesh, said in a statement. "He was a dear friend. Our prayers are with Xulhaz, the other victim, and those injured in the attack."

Police said one of the attackers lured Mannan into a trap by posing as delivery driver and summoning him to the entrance of his building in Dhaka.
