A 45-year-old woman is dead and several others are injured, including a 5-year-old girl, following a rollover crash involving two vehicles on Interstate 95 in Georgetown, Massachusetts, that temporarily closed the highway in both directions early Saturday afternoon.

Georgetown's police and fire departments responded to the serious crash involving two vehicles on I-95 northbound at the Exit 78A/78B off-ramp (Route 133) around 11:15 a.m. and found an SUV that had rolled onto its roof and a sedan with its airbags fully deployed.

Two people had been ejected from the SUV, the fire department said.

Before first responders reached the scene, two off-duty nurses and an off-duty firefighter who were traveling in the area stopped and started administering emergency medical aid to the crash victims.

The Massachusetts Department of Transportation announced I-95 was closed in both directions for a medical helicopter coming to the scene. The southbound side of the highway was closed and detoured at Route 133, while the northbound side was closed and detoured at Route 97.

The Georgetown Fire Department urged drivers to avoid the area, while MassDOT added delays should be expected.

A 52-year-old Peabody man who had been traveling in the SUV was taken via medical helicopter Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston with life-threatening injuries, state police said. There was no update on his condition.

A 45-year-old Georgetown woman who was thrown from the SUV was taken to Anna Jaques Hospital in Newburyport where she died from her injuries, state police said. She was identified on Sunday as Nichole K. Rodgers.

A 5-year-old girl was transported to Portsmouth Regional Medical Center in New Hampshire with minor injuries, state police said.

According to the Georgetown Fire Department, the driver and sole occupant of the sedan was also taken by ambulance to a local hospital. There was no update on their condition.

I-95 later reopened but Exit 78B and Route 133 remained closed for several hours after to accommodate the on-scene investigation, officials said. The scene has since cleared.

Several fire departments responded to assist, including Rowley, Newbury and Groveland.

The exact cause of the crash and its circumstances remain under investigation by state police. No charges have been filed at this time.
