MACHIAS, Maine (AP) — A small hospital in Down East Maine is benefiting from a $1 million gift from a Cherryfield native who made his fortune selling cars.

The estate of John Philip Harriman gave officials from the Down East Community Hospital in Machias a check for the money on Monday.

Harriman died in April 2010 at age 91. He was a self-made millionaire involved in a number of community projects.

The Bangor Daily News says the hospital will use the money to fund various projects.

Interim Hospital President Doug Jones says the donation is the story of a hometown boy making good and then ensuring his community was taken care of. Jones says Harriman had an unwavering dedication to the Down East region of Maine.
