Michelle Shocked Goes on Anti-Gay Rant During San Francisco Show, Cancellations Follow

Organization eTown pulls plug on upcoming Shocked show, saying their organization intends to "foster a spirit of community and inclusiveness."

Michelle Shocked stunned Sunday night in San Francisco--and not at all in a good way.

"I live in fear that the world will be destroyed if gays are allowed to marry," the 51-year-old singer-songwriter reportedly told an appalled crowd at live-music venue Yoshi's.

She summed up by saying, "You can go on Twitter and say 'Michelle Shocked says God hates f-gs,'" according to Matt Penfield, who was live-tweeting the show from the stage. "all cool. 2nd set, she got up went full hate speech," he wrote.

And go on Twitter is pretty much what Shocked's now ex-fans did. Per meow.com (Musicians for Equal Opportunity for Women), one audience member tweeted, "wow, she's a total bigot and said so on stage. It was unreal. We had to leave. I am so disappointed."

And that concertgoer wasn't the only disappointed one, as it appears that Shocked's touring schedule is getting lighter by the minute.

"In light of recent developments, eTown must cancel the upcoming concert with Michelle Shocked, originally scheduled to take place in May at eTown Hall," Helen Forster, founder of the Boudler, Colo.-based eTown, said in a statement.

"From the very beginning, our goal as an organization has been to foster a spirit of community and inclusiveness in all that we do...We are deeply saddened by today's news, and are pulling the plug on this event. Anyone who had purchased tickets for the show can receive a full refund... We apologize for any inconvenience, and appreciate your understanding."

Per a site that's tracking the cancellations, Shocked also now has openings on March 29, when she was originally slated to play the HopMonk Tavern in Novato, Calif.; April 24, when she was supposed to be at Palm's Playhouse in Winters, Calif.; April 26, now that Seattle's Meanders Kitchen has nixed her show; and May 5, when she was going to be in Evanston, Ill.

"Many of you have reached out already following an ugly rant given by Michelle Shocked at her show in San Francisco last night. After speaking with the promoter of that show about the nature of the remarks, it's clear that this is no longer a show we're willing to put our name on. The May 5th performance at SPACE has been cancelled and refunds will be issued at point of purchase," read a statement posted on the Facebook page of venue Evanston SPACE.

"Truth is leading to painful confrontation #shortsharpshocked," Shocked tweeted sometime during or after her second set when, according to Penfield, she went "full hate speech" after a well-received first set.
