Conn. teacher accused of calling student 'black boy'

(NECN) - A middle school teacher in Connecticut is off the job this Friday morning, accused of referring to one of her students as ''black boy.''

That teacher, Kathleen Pyles, is on paid leave from North End Middle School while school officials in Waterbury investigate.

Pyles is accused of saying “go sit down, black boy,” when she apparently couldn't remember the student’s name.

Another child in the class reported it to his mother, who went to the school.

“My son came home and he told me that one of the teachers in the class couldn't remember a student's name and just said ‘How about black boy, go sit down, black boy.’ Basically that's what he told me, that she said that,” says Franchone Bey.

Pyles union president would not talk about the specifics of the case but did tell our affiliate WVIT that the union works to make sure every student has a qualified, caring and committed teacher.
