Police: Downed Utility Pole Sparks Underground Gas Line Fire

Crews in Massachusetts are fighting a blaze after an underground gas line caught fire when powerful nor'easter winds knocked down a utility pole.

Multiple homes on Cherry Street in Wehnam were evacuated as a precaution after the fire sent a 30-foot fireball into the air.

National Grid crews are on scene to shut off the gas supply, and electric crews are working on the utility pole and live wires on the ground.

No homes or structures have been damaged at this time, according to police.

Mutual aid from fire departments in Manchester, Hamilton and Topsfield are on the scene as well.

No injuries have been reported at this time.
