Brothers convicted in One Fund scam to be sentenced

Brothers claimed their dead aunt was injured in the marathon bombings

(NECN: Justin Michaels) - Two brothers convicted of trying to scam the charity dedicated to helping the victims of the Boston Marathon bombings will be sentenced Monday.

Prosecutors say the brothers, Brendan Mattier and Domunique Grice, claimed their dead aunt was injured in the Boston Marathon bombings in order to get $2.2 million from The One Fund Boston.

Both pleaded not guilty and Monday they will learn their sentences.

Mattier, 23, has been found guilty of conspiracy to commit larceny, identity fraud and attempted larceny.

Grice, 28, was found guilty of conspiracy to commit larceny, attempted larceny, but not guilty of identity fraud.

The prosecution said authorities began investigating the claim for their aunt’s double amputation, filed to the One Fund and signed by Mattier, almost immediately, because it lacked medical documentation.

The brothers would have received $2.195 million in compensation from the One Fund.

They planned to use the money to buy a Mercedes-Benz, according to evidence obtained by the prosecution.

Prosecutors said the brothers initially claimed that their dead aunt lost only one leg in the Boston Marathon bombings, but changed their story when they learned that two missing limbs would pay more.

Fraud and conspiracy crimes are punishable by prison time of up to five years.
