Massachusetts State Police: 2 Dead in Separate Crashes

Two people died in separate crashes around Massachusetts on Monday afternoon, state police said.

A 67-year-old man died after his 2014 Dodge Van was driving southbound on Rte. 202 in New Salem, where it hit a 2007 Sterling box truck traveling northbound head-on.

Police say the driver of the truck, 23-year-old Raymond G. Phelps of Greenfield, was not injured in the crash.

Around the same time in Peabody, state police responded to to a fatal rollover on Rte. 128 southbound at the I-95 split, where a driver of a 1987 GMS flat-bed tow truck that had been hauling a car had lost control and rolled over. The driver, a 43-year-old man, was thrown from the tow truck because he wasn't wearing a seat belt, police said. The driver was taken to North Shore Medical Center in Lynn, where he was pronounced dead. The tow truck's passenger, a 65-year-old man, was trapped inside, according to police, and taken to Massachusetts General Hospital for serious injuries after being freed, according to state police.

Two other vehicles were allegedly involved in the crash, according to state police: a 2011 Ford van driven by 34-year-old Luckenson Dorisca of Randolph; and a 2012 Mazda 3, driven by 31-year-old Emilie Rey. Authorities say Dorisca was taken to Lahey Burlington for minor injuries, and Rey was not injured.

Both crashes remain under investigation.
