(NECN) - Voters head to the polls in Massachusetts Tuesday to choose a new senator.

Democratic congressman Ed Markey faces Republican Gabriel Gomez to fill the Senate seat vacated by John Kerry.

The state's top elections official predicts a record-low turnout at the polls, given the special election's unusual timing.

The latest Suffolk University poll has Ed Markey is ahead in the polls 52-42.
