Broadside: Year of the Independents?

Independent gubernatorial candidates Jeff McCormick and Evan Falchuk talk about the race, their positions

Have you noticed that Democrats and Republicans have competition in the Massachusetts governors race?

Independent candidates are crowding the 2014 contest, but two are grabbing attention: Jeff McCormick and Evan Falchuk.

Falchuk is a businessman and founder of the United Independent Party, while McCormick founded the venture capital firm behind a number of companies, including Boston Duck Tours.

Falchuk says he founded the United Independent Party because he felt like the two established parties of the GOP and the Democrats weren't listening enough or being specific about their plans.

"I believe that everyone is equal, that everyone's civil rights have to be protected and the government has to spend our money wisely," he said.

McCormick says he has 27 years of creating thousands of jobs and building small businesses and would focus on "job creation, very specific solutions to problems, lower the cost of health care, lower the cost of energy and provide more opportunity for people."

Falchuk says he's most concerned with the rising cost of living in Massachusetts, while McCormick says he'd like to take away road blocks keeping small businesses from working.
