(NECN: Justin Michaels, Stoneham, Mass.) – NECN has confirmed two people have been shot, one fatally, in a shooting in a Stoneham, Mass. home.

The fatal victim is 26-year-old Joseph Puopolo. He had served in the army and just returned from duty in Afghanistan.

The other victim, Puopolo’s friend, is in the hospital.

Police responded to reports of a shooting around 1:30 a.m. Wednesday morning and now three people are in custody.

Those close to Puopolo were stunned by the news.

"He wanted to become a state cop. He was a fighter, he wanted to be… You know this is just, it's mind-boggling, I don't understand what happened," said Puopolo's godfather, Joseph Alessandro. "I mean I just don't understand it, a good kid like him."

The Middlesex County District Attorney's Office is investigating and handling all media inquiries.
