Fireworks Sales Fizzling Out in Maine

State says sales of consumer fireworks dropped nearly 30 percent since becoming legal in 2012

While fireworks stores across New England are having their biggest sales days of the year this week, new numbers from Maine show the fascination may be fizzling out.

The state says sales of consumer fireworks have dropped nearly 30 percent since they became legal in Maine in 2012.

One theory for the drop is that the novelty has worn off and people who tried them out when they became legal aren't returning as customers. Also, some communities that allowed fireworks the first year they became legal have since changed their local ordinances to ban them because of noise and safety complaints.

Phantom Fireworks in Scarborough says despite the drop, they are still profitable.

"We have not experienced a huge drop, we opened up a brand new store this year, so that is good for us," Jessi Moore said.

Fireworks retailers say they make about 90 percent of their yearly sales in the two weeks leading up to the Fourth of July.
