A Boston Police officer who has been on administrative leave was arrested on Friday for unauthorized use of a BPD vehicle.

Sometime between 5 p.m. and midnight on July 4, the vehicle was recovered near the officer’s residence. Officer Patrick Donovan was arrested in Dorchester by Youth Violence Strike Force.

It is unclear how the officer gained access to the vehicle. The incident that caused the officer to take the vehicle was domestic and occurred outside the city.

Officer Donovan had been on administrative leave since September 2013 after criminal larceny charges were brought against him by BPD Internal Affairs Department. BPD Internal Affairs are investigating the incident from Friday night, in addition to the September 2013 incident.

The department has been taking steps to terminate the officer’s employment since the incident last year.
