(NECN: Jennifer Eagan, Abington, Mass.) - Power was affected in parts of Abington, Mass. when lightning struck a tree.

The bolt hit a tree at the corner of Adams Street and North Avenue, splitting it right down the middle, creating splinters as long as 3 feet and 6 inches around in some cases.

A man reports watching the lightning strike the tree, and says he was almost hit by the splinters flying from the tree.

The storm cell was passing through Abington at around 5:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Jennifer Eagan has more on the story.
