Market Basket Workers Rally in Support of Ousted CEO

An estimated 1,000 people showed up at supermarket chain headquarters in Tewskbury, Mass.

It was a big turnout at Market Basket's corporate headquarters in Tewksbury, Massachusetts, with hundreds of employees looking to send a message to management: Give Arthur T. Demoulas his job back as CEO.

Demoulas was ousted last month by a board of directors loyal to his cousin, Arthur S. Demoulas. The family has been fighting for years over control of the supermarket chain, which has more than 25,000 employees in about 70 stores in Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Maine. Many of the employees are now worried about the direction of the company without Demoulas and the recent hiring of two new CEOs from outside Market Basket.

During the course of the rally and afterward, NECN did not see trucks leaving the warehouse, which is now apparently part of the employees strategy.

Employees at the rally said Arthur T. Demoulas was a great boss who helped make Market Basket a great place to work, offering employees profit sharing, good wages and benefits. They're worried what will happen with new management, which said in a letter to employees they could lose their jobs if they attended the rally instead of going to work.
