Missing Diver Found Dead Off Mass. Coast

Rescue crews in Marblehead and Salem were looking for person in distress near Satan's Rock, behind Children's Island

A search for a missing diver off the coast of Massachusetts has ended tragically.

The scuba diver, who had been reported to be in distress, was found dead Tuesday afternoon, state police confirmed.

Crews had responded off the shore of Marblehead, near Satan's Rock, behind Children's Island in Salem.

The Essex County District Attorney's Office confirmed that the victim, who apparently drowned, was a 58-year-old man from Westfield.

The victim and two other men were diving for scallops.

U.S. Coast Guard, Massachusetts Environmental Police, Marblehead Police, Salem Police, the Salem Harbormaster and Beverly Fire Dive Rescue were on the scene looking for the man.

Additionally, the Coast Guard sent a rescue helicopter. State police later provided sonar equipment and more divers.

The medical examiner's office will work to determine the cause and manner of death, but officials do not suspect foul play.

The North Shore YMCA houses a day camp on Children's Island. According to Marblehead Police, the children on the island were released due to the search efforts and brought by boat to the Corinthian Yacht Club to be picked up by parents.
