(NECN) - The Royal Baby boy weighs in at eight pounds, six ounces.
Even on just his second day in the world, he continues to get a lot of attention, as does his mom, Duchess of Cambridge Kate Middleton, who remains in the hospital.
Dr. Samantha Kaplan, board-certified obstetrician gynecologist and assistant professor at Boston University School of Medicine, joined NECN to discuss the process of the body after childbirth.

Kaplan said that in the United States, after a natural delivery a woman can leave a hospital in about two days.

In Middleton’s case, Kaplan said she should leave within 48 hours, but should have someone at home with her.

What is the average time for labor for a first-time mom?

Kaplan said it can take between three to 14 hours, with the average being about seven.

“Kate Middleton’s labor sounds perfectly normal,” said Kaplan.
