President Obama talks fuel economy deal

(NECN) - In an address to the nation on Friday morning, the president detailed a new deal to double the fuel economy in vehicles on the road.

With the demand for oil on the rise, the president said the US needs to make changes for its own oil dependence. Solutions may not be in the near future, but there are some smaller steps that can help the current situation, said the president.

He joked about his own daughter, Malia, getting her learner's permit in the future.

"I'm hoping to see one of those models that gets a top-speed of 15 miles an hour...the ejector seat any time boys are in the car...so hopefully you guys have some of those in the pipeline."

President Obama focused domestic oil production and clean energy solutions.

The deal, signed Friday, doubles fuel economy standards to 54.5 miles per gallon by the year 2025. The deal further restricts the tailpipe emissions blamed for global warming.
