Inside linebacker Tyrone McKenzie, who I mentioned on Thursday as being like a caged tiger during drills, showed more of the same on Friday. During a goal-line drill, Laurence Maroney swept to the right and, just as he crossed behind the tackle, McKenzie got through the hole and hit him with a classic wrap-tackle. The force of the hit sent McKenzie's helmet flying.
Matthew Slater was down during the morning practice as was Bret Lockett, who left the field Thursday afternoon with a trainer. Wes Welker, Darnell Jenkins and Ron Brace were also sidelined. Not sure if Welker was on the field, but he wasn't as active as he was Thursday if was out there. Sam Aiken was back practicing full after sitting out Thursday.
James Sanders and Kyle Arrington had a thunderous collision in the secondary as they converged to break up a deep pass into the end zone. Both got up without a problem.
Pierre Woods was working in Derrick Burgess' DE/OLB spot on the left side of the defense. On Thursday it was Rob Ninkovich.
Taylor Price, Julian Edelman and Brandon Tate all took turns during punt return drills.
Tate, quite simply, catches just about everything thrown his way no matter where it is. Whether he's starting out hot or this is his standard of play will be interesting to track.
Young Brian Belichick was whipping passes during some of the defensive passing drills.
