Double Amputee Badly Burned in Fire Dies From Injuries

Thomas Page, 72, died after sustaining injuries in a home fire Wednesday

A double amputee in St. Albans, Vermont, who was burned in a fire early Wednesday morning has died from his injuries, according to police.

Around 1:10 a.m., Thomas Page, 72, called from his home on South Main Street. He said his apartment was on fire and he was trapped inside.

Police officers were first on scene and carried him out of the apartment. Page sustained serious burns to his back and arms. He was transported to a local hospital and then to Fletcher Allen Health Care.

Chief Gary L. Taylor said Page died Wednesday night at 7:30 at Fletcher Allen Health Care.

Officers evacuated the other 11 occupants of the apartment building. No other injuries were reported. Damage is estimated at $250,000.

Firemen fought the fire throughout the morning. Vermont State Police said the fire was started by an improperly discarded cigarette.
