Co-Worker Charged With Murder in Fatal Shooting

Marquis Smith of Hyde Park, Mass. held without bail following his arrest

A Hyde Park, Massachusetts, man is being held without bail on a murder charge following his arrest for allegedly shooting his co-worker in Dorchester earlier this year.

Marquis Smith was formally charged Thursday with Daniel P. Taylor's homicide near the intersection of Boston and Howell Streets.

Boston Police arrested Smith Wednesday at the Boston valet service where he and Taylor both worked.

Assistant District Attorney Jennifer Hickman of the DA's Homicide Unit told a judge that the defendant and victim both attended a work-related social event in Boston on the night of February 22. They left the event together with Taylor driving a family member's vehicle.

Prosecutors say while driving through Dorchester, Smith and Taylor became engaged in an argument. Their verbal argument became a physical confrontation, and at some point, prosecutors say, Smith shot Taylor repeatedly before fleeing on foot.

Taylor died of his injuries at Boston Medical Center. He was 23.

The investigation is ongoing, but police say they developed sufficient evidence to charge Smith.

Smith will return to court on September 18.
