Massachusetts State Police have seized 182 bags of heroin and arrested a Vermont man accused of dragging a police officer with his vehicle and leading police on a pursuit on Route 91 in Deerfield Wednesday night.

On Tuesday at 6:50 p.m., a trooper stopped a 2011 Nissan Altima on Route 91 northbound in Deerfield for motor vehicle violations.

Police say the operator, Paul Heim, 30, from Woodstock, Vermont, resisted arrest. Heim got back in his vehicle and fled north, dragging the trooper a short distance. The trooper returned to his cruiser and pursued the suspect.

During the pursuit, Heim threw something from his vehicle later identified to be approximately 182 bags of a white powdery substance consistent with heroin, a plastic bag containing a white powdery substance consistent with crack cocaine and drug paraphernalia.

Additional units from Deerfield and state police responded to the pursuit.

Deerfield Police deployed a tire deflation device which Heim struck. He was arrested and transported to the State Police Barracks in Northampton for booking.

Heim is charged with possession of drugs, unlicensed Operation of a Motor Vehicle, reckless operation of a motor vehicle, resisting arrest, disorderly conduct, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and assault and battery on police officer
