A source with knowledge of the situation confirmed that the Patriots are planning to release safety Brandon McGowan.

The news was first reported by the Boston Herald.

McGowan, a member of the Patriots since 2009, did not play in 2010.

Other reports out of Foxboro today said that the Patriots hosted free agent free safety Dashon Goldson on Sunday. According to those reports, the Patriots are unhappy with their current crop of safeties, and Goldson, a former 49er, could help fill a need at that spot if he signs.

The Patriots also released first-year cornerback Thad Turner and placed rookie free agent offensive lineman Kyle Hix on the injured reserve.
