“Out of Control”: Violence Explodes in Mexican Border City

Violence exploded in one of Mexico's biggest cities along the U.S. border in the wake of a drug leader's capture and arrest on Friday, Reuters reported. Mexican federal police and marines captured Gulf Cartel leader "El Gafe," identified as Jose Hugo Rodriguez Sanchez, sparking gun battles and car fires in the city of Reynosa between rival drug cartels. "The city is completely out of control," said Francisco Garcia Cabeza de Vaca, an opposition senator and former mayor of Reynosa. Reynosa, a city of more than 600,000 across the Rio Grande from McAllen, Texas, has endured an ugly streak as one of Mexico's most violent cities, as the Gulf Cartel and the rival Zetas wage a bloody battle for control of border smuggling routes and crime rackets.
