(NECN) - Alex Rodriguez is fighting his suspension by Major League Baseball, but 13 other players have accepted their punishment, in effect admitting to widespread abuse of performance enhancing drugs.

Dr. Michael O'Brien deals with the consequences of P.E.D. abuse in young athletes.

Dr. O'Brien, who practices sports medicine at Boston Children's Hospital, says P.E.D. abuse is rising, especially among female athletes.

"And that may be a trend as these valuable scholarships are available and women are competing for these valuable scholarships," he says.
