(NECN/NBC: RJ Heim) - Plenty of pictures have been snapped of what some gatherers are calling a higher power at work on the cross atop a North Providence, Rhode Island church.

Visitors have said they see the outline of the Virgin Mary, whom Christians believe is the mother of God, in the darker etching on the grey metal cross.

"At first, the scientist would think that there's something going on with the metals maybe so that's what the images is. It's a silhouette," said Christina Serradas, a visitor at the church. "It's kind of like when you're a child with the clouds and you form your own pictures. But in this kind of world, it's good to have something to believe in."

"I don't quite know what it is. I mean it's certainly an iconic image on that cross. It's a water stain of some kind but it's pouring rain right now. It's been pouring rain all day. The cross should be soaking wet and its not," said Ryan McCarty, another visitor. "There's some sort of icon some sort of image on there and it's very familiar if you're Catholic."

Despite heavy rain, visitors continued to flock to get a glimpse of the cross.
